Massage

A massage generally involves pressing, rubbing and manipulating the skin, muscles and ligaments using different techniques.

Massage therapists typically work with their hands and fingers but may also use their forearms, elbows and even feet.

There are many types of massage. These vary with the purpose of the massage and the strokes and techniques used.

A gentle form would be a soothing Swedish massage that uses long, gliding strokes, kneading and deep circular movements.

A deep-tissue massage falls at the other end of the spectrum as it uses greater pressure and more forceful strokes.

A relaxing massage calms the nervous system, promotes a sense of relaxation and leaves you with a sense of wellbeing.

Studies have found that it offers certain health benefits.

On the physical level, massage can help to ease muscle aches, reduce fatigue, enhance sleep quality, lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, improve blood circulation, stimulate the lymphatic system, increase endorphins and strengthen the immune system.

There are also emotional and mental benefits to massage. It can foster peace of mind, relieve mental stress, satisfy the need for a caring and nurturing touch, provide a feeling of well-being, and reduce levels of anxiety
